GROVER & FRANCES CLEVELAND .  Grover Cleveland (1837-1908) was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 22nd and 24th President of the United States.  He is the only US President to have served non-consecutive presidential terms, the first between 1885 to 1889 and the second between 1893 to 1897.  In June 1886, the 49-year-old Cleveland married his 21-year-old ward, Frances Cleveland (1864-1947), and together they had five children, including their oldest, Ruth Cleveland (1891-1904), who unfortunately died at the age of twelve of diphtheria. SILVER SHOE HORN PERSONALLY ENGRAVED AND GIFTED BY GROVER CLEVELAND, ON BEHALF OF HIS OLDEST CHILD WHO WAS ONE-YEAR-OLD AT THE TIME, TO HIS WIFE FRANCES CLEVELAND DURING THE 1892 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION: “TO MAMA, FROM RUTH, 1892” Silver shoe horn personally engraved and gifted by Grover Cleveland, on behalf of his daughter, Ruth Cleveland, who was one-year-old at the time, to his wife Frances Cleveland during the 1892 presidential election: “To Mama, From Ruth, 1892.”  The shoe horn originally comes from the personal collection of Grover and Frances and was later inherited by their daughter, Esther, who in turn gave it to her daughters, Marion Frances Bosanquet Daniel (1919-2016) and Philippa Ruth Bosanquet Foot (1920-2010).  The shoe horn contains a fleur-de-lis design at the top, engraved inscription at the center, stamped “Sterling”, measures 6” by 2”, and in fine condition with two sides near the center bent and cracked. ORIGINALLY FROM THE PERSONAL COLLECTION OF GROVER AND FRANCES AND WAS LATER INHERITED BY THEIR DAUGHTER, ESTHER, WHO IN TURN GAVE IT TO HER DAUGHTERS Personal possessions of Grover and Frances Cleveland are virtually unobtainable.  We were only able to locate one other similar item available for sale at auction, Grover’s eyeglasses, which sold for $3,375 at RR Auction in September 2014. Provenance: President Grover and First Lady Frances Cleveland > Inherited by their daughter, Esther Cleveland Bosanquet > Inherited by her daughters, Marion Frances Bosanquet Daniel and Philippa Ruth Bosanquet Foot.
